Dr. Hoi-Ying Holman:
Scientist of Chemical Ecology
Dr. Hoi-Ying Holman is a Chemical Ecology Scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), University of California at Berkeley. She is also a Director of the Berkeley Synchrotron Infrared Structural Biology Program at the Advanced Light Source, an investigator at the Virtual Institute for Microbial Stress and Survival and at the Center for Environmental Biotechnology.
She was awarded the 2010 David A. Shirley Award for her pioneering work in using synchrotron infrared to characterize chemical reactions and function in living microorganisms in vivo.
Her novel approach (http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/ac100991d) enables alternate ways to study the enormous yet untapped natural microbial world and to design new ways to effectively manipulate them for societal and environmental benefits. Holman received her Ph.D. (1986) from the University of California at Berkeley in Environmental Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, was a postdoctoral fellow under the University of California Toxic Substance Research and Training Program (1986-1989) before becoming a scientist/engineer at LBNL.
She established LBNL’s Environmental Measurement Laboratory in 1990, and from 1990-1994 served as its Director. Her research interests focus on developing new technologies that draw from multiple scientific areas (chemistry, physics, biology, ecology, engineering, earth sciences and medicine) to meet the challenges in environmental sustainability, renewable energy, and ecologically acceptable land use.
John L Petersen:
President And Founder - The Arlington Institute
John Petersen is considered by many to be one of the most informed futurists in the world. He is best-known for writing and thinking about high impact surprises—wild cards—and the process of surprise anticipation and for having conceived of and developed the first national surprise anticipation system in the world for the government of Singapore.
His current professional involvements include the development of sophisticated tools for anticipatory analysis and surprise anticipation, long-range strategic planning and helping leadership design new approaches for dealing with the future.
In 1989, Petersen founded The Arlington Institute (TAI), a non-profit, future-oriented research institute where he now edits and publishes FUTUREdition, an internationally acclaimed newsletter that tracks early indicators of potentially significant futures.
An award-winning writer, Petersen’s first book, The Road to 2015: Profiles of the Future was awarded Outstanding Academic Book of 1995 by CHOICE Academic Review, and remained on The World Future Society’s best-seller list for more than a year.
His second book, Out of the Blue: How to Anticipate Wild Cards and Big Future Surprises, was also a WFS best-seller. His coauthored article, ?The Year 2000: Social Chaos or Social Transformation? was one of the most highly acclaimed writings on Y2K.
He has also written many articles and papers on different aspects of the future including national security and the military, the future of energy and the future of the media. Recently, he was a featured contributor to the widely broadcast television special, NOSTRADAMUS 2012.
His 1988 book-length report The Diffusion of Power: An Era of Realignment was used at the highest levels of American government as a basis for strategic planning.
John’s current book, A Vision for 2012: Planning for Extraordinary Change, presents a systems approach for preparing for big change whether from the perspective of a government, organization, or individual. Petersen is a past board member of the World Future Society, writes on the future of aviation for Professional Pilot magazine and is a member of the board of directors of the Charles E. and Ann Morrow Lindbergh Foundation.
He is a network member of the Global Business Network, a fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science, and is a member of the Global Agenda Council of the Geography of Innovation for the World Economic Forum.
John leads workshops that help groups build new images of possible futures and visions and plans for reaching their goals. He lives in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia with his wife, Diane.
Dr. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim:
Professor of Organic Chemistry
Prof. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, is the Managing Director of the Centre for Phytotherapy Research (CEPHYR) and Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Mauritius. Recently elected Chairperson the International Council for Scientific Union – Regional Office for Africa for the period (2011-2014), she has served successively as Dean of the Faculty of Science and Pro Vice Chancellor (2004-2010). She has also worked at the Mauritius Research Council as Manager for Research (1995-1997). In 2011, she was nominated Independent Board Member of the Local Advisory Board of Barclays Plc.
Ms Gurib-Fakim earned a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Surrey, UK (1983) and a PhD from the University of Exeter (1987) at which time she began working at the University of Mauritius. Between 1987-1992, served as Project leader for the first regional research project on the Inventory and study of medicinal and aromatic plants of the Indian Ocean, funded by the European Development Fund under the aegis of The Indian Ocean Commission.
During 2000-2002, she served as the national coordinator for the ‘Indian Ocean University’ funded by the European Union. She has participated in several consultation meetings on environmental issues organised by the World Bank and most recently as the lead coordinating author on the international Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD) spearheaded by the World Bank.
As a Founding member of the Association of African Medicinal Plants, she coauthored the first ever African Herbal Pharmacopoeia funded by the CDE and ProInvest (ACP), Brussels. She is member of the Reference Group of the International Science Programme (IPICS) of Uppsala University, Sweden and serves as scientific advisor to the International Foundation of Science (IFS), Stockholm. She has also served as member of the Expert Panel on ‘Infectious diseases’ of the Special Programme convened by the UNDP, UNICEF, WHO and the World Bank. She also serves as a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of NTembi and Nuclear Energy Commission of South Africa (NECSA); member of the International Advisory Committee for the Cyclotron project of the Indian Ocean based in La Reunion (France) and the international representative on the assessment panel of the Canadian AUCC-CIDA projects.
Author and/or co-editor of over 26 books and book chapters in the field of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, she has lectured extensively across the world. Member of the editorial boards of major journals, she has served on technical committees in various capacities, including the chair of several national committees in Mauritius.
Elected Fellow of the Linnaen Society of London in 2007; Fellow of the Islamic Academy of Science, Jordan in 2009 and Fellow of the African Science Institute in 2010, Ms Gurib-Fakim received the 2007 l’Oreal-UNESCO Prize for Women in Science and Laureate of the National Economic and Social Council. She is recipient of the special prize from the CTA/NEPAD/AGRA/RUFORUM and the African Union Commission Award for Women in Science both in 2009. She was elevated to the Order of the Commander of the Star and Key by the Government of Mauritius in 2008 and admitted to the Order of the Order of the Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Academiques by the Government of France in 2010.

George Swanson:
Building Biologist
George is a Building Biologist and is listed in “Who’s Who” in America in 1996 for his contribution to sustainable technology, environmentally conscious building design and construction – Buildings that heal and breathable building materials. George’s new book, Breathing Walls Home | Breathing Walls
His popular Dome Scrap Book, inspired by the works of Buckminster Fuller and published in 1981, details George’s experiences designing and participating in building more than 300 geodesic dome structures in the Pacific Northwest from 1974 to 1981.
Since the 1980’s George’s firm, Swanson Associates, now based in Austin, Texas, has completed nearly one hundred low-toxic and fully nontoxic “breathing” natural building projects in eleven states and several foreign countries. Some of the building systems used were traditional straw-clay, rammed earth, Faswall¨ cement-bonded wood fiber wall forms, autoclaved aerated concrete block, and most recently magnesia-based (MgO) natural ceramic cement. Several of these projects have included single-family wetland septic systems, rooftop water collection systems, pervious concrete landscape features and solar voltaic energy systems.

In recent years Swanson Associates have been lead design/build consultants for numerous commercial projects, including several churches, a monastery and a twenty-one-building natural medicine complex in Austin, Texas. Ongoing long-term international projects include a waterfront eco-resort in Kauai, restoration of an ancient hacienda in Mexico, and an eco-village complex in Trinidad. Recently George returned from his fourth trip to China where on an ongoing basis he is conducting product development for DragonBoard¨, including all-natural fiber/MgO cement-based wall, roof and floor prefabricated structural insulative panels (SIP’s). He is also a partner in the Substance Distributing Company of Austin which distributes several brands of MgO-based building materials.
Janell Kapoor:
Founding Director of Kleiwerks International
Janell Kapoor is the Founding Director of Kleiwerks International. She is an avid mud mama, global movement-builder, designer and teacher whose work has inspired people from over 52 countries to build their own homes with what they have where they are.
She led the initial ecological design-build trainings in Thailand, Argentina and Turkey, which resulted in the building of educational centers, training programs, businesses, policy change and regional movements of hundreds of thousands of mud people.
Janell lives in the oldest mountains on the planet at the Ashevillage Institute, a one-acre permaculture site that features residential and urban solutions, such as an 18,000 gallon five-pond rainwater catchment and aquaponic greenhouse system, edible and medicinal landscape, recycled courtyard kitchen, beautiful mud art and an earthen-renovated guest house.
Janell is also thrilled to be launching the Women of the Americas Sustainability Initiative (WASI), an action-oriented alliance of women leaders who construct, educate, organize and advocate for strong and empowered communities through ecological design-build practices, with the aim of creating a socially and ecologically resilient world.

Dr. Clyde S. Tamaru:
Aquaponics, Aquaculture, Hydroponics, Sustainable Agriculture
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1953 he is a sansei (third generation American of Japanese ancestry). A graduate of McKinley High school he obtained his B.S. in Biology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa then worked at the Oceanic Institute (OI) as an aquaculture technician before deciding to pursue a graduate education and received a Master’s Degree in Zoology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1979.
For five years he would work as a radiochemistry technologist at the Queen’s Medical Center and would later return to the aquaculture field in 1984 by starting work at the Oceanic Institute and would become the finfish program manager for the institute.
While working at OI he would also complete his doctorate entitled, “Studies on the use of chronic and acute LHRH-a treatments on controlling maturation and spawning in the milkfish (Chanos chanos Forsskal)” at the University of Tokyo, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Fisheries.
He would work in the private sector as an aquaculture consultant and formed Hawaii C’s Aquaculture Consultant Services in 1993 and continues to consult part time to this day. He would also take on a position as an aquaculture specialist at the University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Program, School of Ocean Earth Science and Technology in 1995. He would later move to his current position as an aquaculture specialist in the Department of Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) in 2009.
At his current non-tenure track position he manages the Aquaculture/Aquaponic Extension Program in CTAHR which include a variety of extension and outreach projects that interact with a variety of public and private institutional partners. Likewise he is actively engaged in a variety of research initiatives in both freshwater and marine aquaculture that include aquaponics.
Michael Waters:

Michael Waters is an advanced technology adviser, researcher, inventor and sustainable recovery strategist. He has previously owned businesses in, designed and built: multi-axis robotics, adaptive manufacturing systems, experimental aircraft, custom homes, portable housing systems. Beverly Rubik, Ph.D.
Pioneering Researcher into Subtle Energies, Frontier Science and Medicine
Beverly Rubik earned her Ph.D. in biophysics in 1979 at the University of California at Berkeley. She is internationally renowned for her pioneering work in frontier science and medicine. Her main area of focus is research on the subtle energetics of living systems, including the human energy field, energy medicine devices, and whole-person health and healing.
She has published over 80 papers and 2 books. Dr. Rubik presently serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Alternative & Complementary Medicine; Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine; Integrative Medicine Insights; and the new Journal of Vortex Science and Technology.
Dr. Rubik was one of 18 U.S. Congressionally-appointed members of the Program Advisory Board to the Office of Alternative Medicine at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 1992-1997, and chaired the NIH panels on bioelectromagnetic medicine and energy healing. This was the precursory organization that launched the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
In 1996, Dr. Rubik founded the Institute for Frontier Science (IFS), a nonprofit corporation for research and education. Laurance S. Rockefeller, Sr., helped support the founding of the IFS. In 2002, IFS was awarded an NIH center grant for frontier medicine research on biofield science in consortium with researchers at the University of Arizona.
Dr. Rubik was a project director in this consortium and conducted studies on Reiki, a form of Japanese spiritual healing, and on qigong therapy, a healing practice that originated in China.More recently, Dr. Rubik has published original research studies on brainwaves and bliss; and subtle energies and water in relation to healing.
Presently she is conducting research on biophoton emission from humans in healing states, as well as studying more about the properties of water in relation to life and subtle energies. She is a faculty member at several universities, teaching in integral health studies and energy medicine.
Beverly Rubik has won several awards for her research, including the Alyce and Elmer Green Award for her pioneering science, awarded to her in 2009 by the International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine, and the Integrity in Science Award by the Weston A. Price Foundation. Dr. Michael Ben-Eli:

Michael Ben-Eli is founder of the Sustainability Laboratory, established in order to develop and demonstrate breakthrough approaches to sustainability practices, expanding prospects and producing positive, life affirming impacts on people and ecosystems in all parts of the world.
An international management consultant, Michael pioneered applications of Systems Thinking and Cybernetics in management and organization. Over the years he worked on synthesizing strategy issues in many parts of the world and in diverse institutional settings, ranging from small high technology firms to multinational enterprises, manufacturing companies, financial institutions, health care and educational organizations, government agencies, NGOs, and international multilateral organizations.

Sesto Giovanni Castagnoli:

Dana Hudson, MSPT:
Caring Hands – Healing
Dana Hudson is the owner of Caring Hands Rehab which is an outpatient physical therapy clinic in Canon City, Colorado. She graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 1987 with a BS in Zoology and then in 1993 with a MS in Physical Therapy from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. She has studied and practiced in many aspects of physical therapy to include geriatrics, pediatrics, pain management, orthopedic and neurologic injury and post surgical rehabilitation.
Her current focus has been on total wellness using a combination of manual and energy techniques to accomplish this. She has a vast love for animals and has been working on starting a hippotherapy program to utilize horses and their incredible energy to assist with the healing of children and adults with autism as well as other neurological, physical and psychological deficits. Kosha Joubert:

Kosha Anja Joubert (MSc Organisational Development) is an international facilitator, trainer, manager and consultant. She has worked extensively in the fields of curriculum development, international collaboration and sustainable development. She has lived in South Africa, The Netherlands, Germany and the UK and brings a deep understanding of cultural diversity to her work. She is fluent in German, English, Dutch, and Afrikaans and has also delivered programmes in French.
In her twenties she travelled and worked with a performance group, the Mutoid Waste Company for two years. In this time she gathered experience creating props and costumes from waste (mainly rubber inner tubes) and MC’ing parties and performances. Kosha currently serves as President of the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN-International). GEN was set up in 1995 to support organisations and societies to transition into resilience, learning to sustain and regenerate their social and natural environments. Kosha simultaneously holds the position of Managing Director of GEN-Europe, the European branch of GEN-International (www.gen-europe.org). In this role she has been the driving force behind the emergence of GEN-Africa as an independent region within GEN, and is currently working with organisations in the Middle East on the emergence of GEN-Middle East. Through this, Kosha has gained extensive experience in working with participants from these regions in Leadership and Sustainable Venture Trainings, financed and funded through the German Foreign Ministry and the Anne Lindh Foundation.
Kosha is a co-founder of Gaia Education, which develops trainings at the cutting-edge of sustainability, and sits on the Certification Board of Gaia Education (www.gaiaeducation.net). She is co-author of the internationally applied Gaia Education curriculum, The Ecovillage Design Education, the development of which was endorsed by UNITAR and recognised as an official contribution to the UN ‘Decade for the Education for Sustainable Development 2004-2014’. The Ecovillage Design Education has been run in 35 countries since 2006. Kosha has been lead faculty on 14 of these courses.
In 2010, Kosha initiated an EU-funded Learning Partnership that brought together the expertise of eight key European educational movements in the field of sustainability to synthesize the best of their teaching materials and methods. This led to the curriculum of the Transition to Resilience Training, a 2-year long Training of Trainers in organisational development and leadership that is now being piloted. This training focuses on building learning communities amongst participants to enhance continuing personal and organisational growth.
Kosha has worked as an organisational consultant since 2006, specialising in leadership development and the development of civil society organisations’ capacity to influence societal transitions. Lately, this work has brought her in more contact with governmental institutions, and the corporate world (Thailand, Senegal, Germany, EU). She has regularly organised and facilitated conferences, especially in multi-cultural settings in Europe (Finnland, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Hungary, Switzerland) and Africa (Egypt, Senegal, South Africa, DRCongo, Kenya), also since 2006.
She has worked as a sustainability trainer and educator from 1996 onwards, specialising in courses on communication skills, leadership, facilitation, decision-making, conflict-facilitation, collective intelligence, holistic sustainability and resilience. She has led 4-week courses in international settings in Germany, Italy, India, Senegal, Kenya and South Africa.

Don Smith has an extensive invention portfolio ranging from automotive, home and commercial design, to solar energy equipment, wind turbine blades, compress gas tanks produced in light weight composites, to actual design and construction of boats and yachts.
Don has a deep understanding of the structure, materials required to withstand stress over time, which evolved into his present-day endeavors in the material sciences. After much experience in ergonomic design, prototyping, tooling, testing and production Don has a unique if not irreplaceable engineering perspective.
He has conclude that volcanic basalt rock converted into a “glass-state” structural fiber will prevail over all others on a performance/cost basis for reinforcement of cement materials for infrastructure.
